TUNL Code of Conduct

The American Physical Society (APS), in its Policy on Equal Professional Opportunity encourages the enactment of comparable policies at home institutions and workplaces. Thus, the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) adopts the basic principles endorsed by the APS as detailed below.

1. Policies

As part of its goal of advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of nuclear physics, the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) affirms a policy of equal opportunity for all those who work at TUNL.

This policy requires that all members of TUNL, as well as all visitors, conduct their professional activities without discrimination or harassment in regard to personal factors, including (but not limited to) gender, gender identity, race, national origin, age, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status, disability, or any other characteristic protected by applicable laws. Because respect for individuals is integral to achieving a positive work environment, it is the policy of TUNL that harassment of colleagues and co-workers in the professional environment, including sexual or racial harassment, is unacceptable behavior. Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.

Bullying, which is defined as unwelcome, aggressive behavior involving the use of influence, threat, intimidation, or coercion to dominate others in the professional environment, will also not be tolerated.

2. Professional Conduct

TUNL endorses the APS Guidelines for Professional Conduct. All TUNL personnel and all visiting researchers should be familiar with these guidelines.

3. Guidelines for Authorship

All collaborations at TUNL independent of size must follow the authorship guidelines of the APS. Details specific to research at TUNL are described in a separate policy

4. Violations of the Code of Conduct

Violations of the code of conduct can be reported to a member of the TUNL Scientific Steering Committee (TSSC), the Climate Committee, the Duke Physics Department Conduct Committee Report Form, or the appropriate university’s Compliance Office. The contact information is provided below. The TSSC will address complaints in coordination with the appropriate offices of the Consortium Universities. For cases of discrimination that violate federal law, assault, sexual harassment, research misconduct or asset misappropriation, TUNL Faculty are legally required to notify University administrators of a complaint. Actions against the harasser may range from verbal warning or professional development training, up to removal from the TUNL consortium and a permanent ban from accessing TUNL resources and staff. The TSSC or Climate Committee can help victims find a new supervisor or be reassigned to a different research group if requested. Retaliation will not be tolerated and is in violation of this policy and university policies
